Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LA PUENTE - No victims of gunfire were found, or turned up at area hospitals Tuesday night after a man was arrested for firing a handgun in a La Puente neighborhood, a Sheriff’s lieutenant said. Deputies responded to several calls of gunfire between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The gunfire was heard near Willow and Nelson avenues and Sandia Avenue and Homeward Street. Witnesses reported seeing a man firing a handgun into the air, according to Lt. Baker of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. The suspect fled in a vehicle after the shootings. During a search of the area, deputies located the suspect on Tonopah Avenue as he fled from the vehicle and ran towards a home, Baker told SGV CityWatch. The suspect was eventually located in some bushes he was using as a cover near a residence. No other suspects were sought, baker told SGV CityWatch.
“To our knowledge, we don’t have any victims. We certainly called the local hospitals. Nobody at the hospitals were reporting gunshot victims,” Baker told SGV CityWatch. Deputies reportedly recovered a firearm. Arrested was Javier Rivera, 36. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to Sgt. Molina of the Sheriff’s Industry Station. Rivera was found at Nelson and Tonopah avenues, Molina told SGV CityWatch. There is a rumor being perpetrated that a drive-by shooting occurred in La Puente Tuesday night that is connected to the gunfire call. Deputies later discovered that the alleged drive-by turned out to be vandalism to a vehicle caused by a BB gun, Baker told SGV CityWatch. The vandalism occurred at Amar Road and Willow Avenue around 9:45 p.m., just after the gunfire call, Baker told SGV CityWatch. Rivera is being held in lieu of $120,000 bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in Rio Hondo Municipal Court December 4, according to Los Angeles County booking records. |
