Police responded to Serenity Villas, 158 E. Bonita Ave., just before 6 a.m. March 18 to a reported suspicious death of a woman and a dog. It is unclear how long the two were dead before being found.
Firefighters first arrived to the unit on a reported fire sprinkler activation. Firefighters responded again soon after and found carpeting on fire and the dead woman and dog. The woman has yet to publicly identified. Next of kin are being sought, Pomona Police said. The checkpoint operated at Lexington Avenue and Garey Avenue from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. March 15 also yielded 36 citations/arrests for driving on a suspended or revoked license. 16 vehicles were also towed, Pomona Police said. DUI checkpoint locations are based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests.

Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Officers working a gang suppression detail arrested an alleged armed suspect carrying narcotics after he took refuge in a refrigerator early Saturday. Upland man Michael Lopez Jr., 23, was taken into custody after fleeing officers conducting a traffic stop in the 100 block of West Kingsley Avenue March 16. The driver allegedly performed a traffic violation and Lopez, a rear passenger, fled the vehicle, according to the Pomona Police Department. Officers established a containment after Lopez began fleeing through residential yards.
A helicopter equipped with a heat vision camera detected a presence in a resident’s yard. Officers arrived, searched the yard and found Lopez hiding in a closed refrigerator, Pomona Police said. Officers searched the area for discarded evidence and located a loaded firearm, in addition to a loaded gun clip and narcotics found on Lopez, Pomona Police said. Lopez was booked on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm, being a gang member in possession of a loaded firearm, carrying a high-capacity magazine, possessing a firearm and narcotics, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and a felon in possession of ammunition. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Pomona Police officers working a gang suppression detail arrested a resident March 13 and uncovered a large quantity of drugs for sale. The department’s Major Crimes Task Force served a search warrant around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday after gathering intelligence about suspect Jesus Fernandez-Mejia, 50. The search warrant was executed in the 600 block of East Mission Boulevard, and uncovered methamphetamine and heroin, Pomona Police said. “The total amount of narcotics seized had a street value of $9,000,” Pomona Police said in a written statement.
Fernandez-Mejia was booked on suspicion of possession for sales of narcotics and possession of a controlled substance for sales. The operation was conducted by the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force and the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Police are looking for the acquaintance of a woman locked in an empty rail car for four days was intentionally left there, police said Sunday. The woman was rescued from the abandoned box car behind Cesar Chavez Park near Barjud Avenue and Valley Boulevard around 2 p.m. March 10. Pomona Police state their dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call at 1:27 p.m. from the woman trapped on the west side of town for four days without food or water. Los Angeles County Firefighters received a 9-1-1 call at 12:35 p.m. from the victim. Her phone disconnected and she couldn't provide firefighters with an exact location, according to Dispatch Supervisor Ed Pickett of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Firefighters somehow pinpointed a possible location at Mt. Vernon Avenue east of the 71 freeway, but had the task of checking about a half-mile stretch of empty box cars along the railway. The woman and her male acquaintance were living in the box car during te last week. She sent him out to buy food and drugs, Pomona Police said. “The suspect then intentionally locked the door on his way out of the railcar; trapping the victim inside,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. The victim’s cellphone had difficulty working properly, Pomona Police said. The victim was hospitalized as a precaution at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Police seek the suspect, who is facing felony false imprisonment charges. The woman called 9-1-1 dispatchers and said she was trapped inside an abandoned box car, according to Dispatch Supervisor Ed Pickett of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters located the woman just before 2 p.m. near Cesar Chavez Park at Barjud Avenue and Valley Boulevard. A Los Angeles County Fire Department squad and an ambulance have been requested
Firefighters were called around 12:35 a.m. Firefighters lost cellphone contact with the woman after her phone apparently went dead, Pickett said. “We have a half a mile worth of box cars, so we’re going door to door trying to find her,” Pickett said. The extent of the woman's injuries is unknown. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A stabbing suspect who killed one woman and injured a man was found and arrested several blocks away from where the incident unfolded Saturday. Jose Mancinas, 21, was taken into custody by a Pomona officer who was driving back to the Pomona Police Station from the crime scene. The officer recognized Mancinas from surveillance footage taken before the attack, according to the Pomona Police Department. Police found items on Mancinas linking him to the attack, Pomona Police said.
A 49-year-old woman and 29-year-old man were both stabbed multiple times in the 1300 block of East Mission Boulevard around 1:45 p.m. Saturday, March 9. The woman later died of her wounds after being hospitalized. The man is expected to survive. Mancinas was booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He is being held in lieu of $2 million bail and awaits a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court Tuesday, March 12. A man and woman were both stabbed multiple times in their upper torsos in the 1400 block of East Mission Boulevard around 1:43 p.m. March 9. The victims are listed in serious condition, the Pomona Police Department said.
The suspect, only described as a man with multiple tattoos, fled on foot. Mission Boulevard from Reservoir Street to East End is blocked to traffic until further notice. Officers responding to a report of a man down at a construction lot on the corner of Commercial Street and Myrtle Avenue March 9 found a deceased man in his 30s at 7:15 a.m., Pomona Police said.
