Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor MONTEBELLO - A man armed with a knife inside a Sheriff’s SUV kept deputies at bay before being taken into custody Tuesday morning.
The suspect was being transported to jail by a deputy from the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station when the suspect slipped out of his handcuffs and produced a knife, according to Deputy Wally Bracks of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The suspect barricaded himself in the Sheriff’s patrol SUV at Garfield Avenue and Whittier Boulevard. An East Los Angeles deputy arrested the suspect around 4:05 a.m. after he was spotted in the area. He was sought for an outstanding warrant, Bracks said. “The deputy handcuffed and put the suspect in the backseat of his vehicle and was transporting him to jail. The suspect slipped out of his handcuffs and produced a knife that was on his person,” Bracks said. The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau as well as crisis negotiators responded to get the suspect to surrender peacefully. The suspect was finally removed from the SUV and taken into custody. The suspect has yet to be booked as he is undergoing a mental evaluation, according to Lt. Mejia of the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station. |
